Easier Duplicates, Smarter Selectors, and Consistency

Back in May we posted a quick note about polishing. Since then we’ve been chugging away and wanted to highlight some improvements we think will make your Harvesting a bit more bountiful.

Duplicating Archived Projects

First, you can now duplicate archived projects. In the past, you used to have to unarchive a project to duplicate it—but why? You let us know duplicating was just as important for archived projects, and now it’s easy peasy. Just click the Duplicate button that appears at the top right of the archived project’s Analysis page and it’s done.

Smarter Date Selectors

Second, we made our date selectors smarter. In many places throughout Harvest, we let you easily select a date range. You have one field for the start date and another for the end. This usually works fine, but sometimes you’d select a start date in the future. If so, the end date wouldn’t change—and you’d wind up with an end date that fell before the start date.

Today, Harvest is just a bit more savvy: We’ll update your end date based on the start date you select.

Consistency in the Small Things

Last but not least, we’ve been hard at work behind the scenes to make sure your experience in Harvest is consistent. Recently we’ve been focusing on:

  • Improving the look and consistent usage of icons.
  • Making sure high-level layouts (like page headers) are the same throughout Harvest.
  • Editing copy, so when referencing the same thing, we use the same language.
  • Updating components like tables, forms, and buttons to use the same design styles.

Some of these updates aren’t immediately obvious, but with consistency comes predictability. And a predictable app is easy to use. There’s more in the pipeline for consistency updates, but we think in the long run Harvest will feel smoother and more familiar.

    Nice to hear about the work on the date selectors. Speaking of which: please add a “custom” option to the “uninvoiced report”. When I bill customers I always need the range “from beginning of the year” to “end of previous month”. Right now I cannot to that so I end up with having to delete all the hours from the current month out of the invoice.

  • Great to see some improvements. Would love to see a customisable date range default. I.e. whenever I create an invoice it is always has the same start day (26th of the previous month) to an end day (25th of the current month). Very laborious having to change these each time you want to create an invoice, then detailed reports for expenses each month.

  • It would be great if there was a function on the project screen where you can minimise the client to simply see just their name and can if you wanted to to click on the button to open up and see what projects they have.We have a lot of clients and it takes ages to scroll past clients that i don’t need to see at that point.

  • When in the project screen, and when you click into a particular project, it would be great to have a “report” button available – just like there is to do an invoice.
    I use the report button all the time but it can be a nuisance when i have to jump into a different screen all the time to generate a report rather than simply pushing just one button to get there.
    Also would be good if i could choose a default instead of the standard option of “weekly” when i generate a report. I change this single everytime!!! :/

  • Expanding on the custom invoice roll up. I tend to have many recurring invoices for clients as well as project / on-demand type work. When people get peppered with 3-5 invoices every month it gets tedious. My clients and I would both appreciate the ability to have all related charges to a client with-in a single monthly invoice.

    Kat, are you usually looking for a specific project for a client? I wonder if the Projects search feature might be handy–you can search a client’s name, and that’ll show you all projects for that client. From search, just click the project you need and you’ll be taken right to its page. Let me know if that won’t work, though! Also, a bit of good news: We’re working on improving reporting so you can get detailed reports without having to leave your Projects section!

    Aaron, are you using our Client Dashboard? That’s a secure site online where your client can go to view all their outstanding and recently paid invoices.   • My clients aren’t really interested in using that. The idea here is to simplify the workflow for my clients to pay. I can continue to suggest they take a look at it, but I have auto-payments setup for some of my recurring charges via braintree (still hoping for an integration there someday).

  • Hi Calina – sorry but the Projects search feature doesn’t work for me. Like I said before, it would be fantastic to have a “minimise/maximise” button on each client’s name in projects, especially when you are working on a certain client’s projects and don’t need to see all the other clients we have on the go. This feature would certainly make using Harvest a lot easier!

    Thanks for your thoughts on this. Ideally I would want this default date applied across the reporting section too. As we have to use the same dates for reporting on detailed time and expenses.

  • Is it possible to setup auto payment via harvest somehow that I’m missing? I have to run all my recurring payments through other providers right now (braintree/stripe).
