Understanding Public Project Budget Tracking in Nigeria
Public project budget tracking in Nigeria is essential for ensuring transparency and accountability in government spending. Various platforms are designed to facilitate this process, allowing citizens to actively participate in monitoring public projects. With the launch of the Eyemark application in 2022, the Nigerian government has provided a tool that lets citizens track Federal Government projects nationwide. Initial project data, including the title, code, and funding, is uploaded by the Ministry of Finance, with details from other ministries and agencies added subsequently.
Civil society organizations also play a crucial role. For instance, Tracka by BudgIT enables citizens to collaborate and provide feedback on public projects within their communities. This platform has expanded from six states in 2014 to 32 states, monitoring over 17,811 projects and recording more than 3,500 success stories of citizen engagement. These initiatives exemplify the growing infrastructure that supports citizen involvement in budget tracking across Nigeria.
