Essential Compliance Requirements for Greek Invoices

To ensure your invoices are legally valid in Greece, adhering to specific tax regulations is crucial. Every invoice must include a unique, sequential number and the date of issuance. Key details for both the supplier and customer are mandatory, including their full names, addresses, and their Greek Tax Identification Number (AFM). The AFM, or Αριθμός Φορολογικού Μητρώου, is the equivalent of a VAT ID in Greece and is essential for all tax obligations. You must also provide a detailed description of the goods or services, including quantities and unit prices. Furthermore, the invoice needs to clearly state the net taxable value, the applicable VAT rate, and the total VAT amount. Greece's standard VAT rate is 24%, with reduced rates of 13% and 6% applying to specific goods and services. For VAT-exempt supplies, a citation of the relevant regulation is required.

Customizing Your Greek Invoice Template

Personalizing your Greek invoice template allows you to maintain brand consistency while meeting compliance. You have options to prominently display your business's name, address, and contact information, ensuring clarity for your clients. Incorporating your company logo and branding elements, such as specific fonts or colors, helps reinforce your professional image. Beyond aesthetics, consider adjusting the invoice format to suit different industries or transaction types. For instance, invoices for services might emphasize detailed descriptions of work performed, while those for goods would highlight itemized lists and quantities. Ensure that any customization doesn't obscure mandatory information or compromise the invoice's readability, as clarity is key for both your clients and tax authorities.

Formats and Download Options for Greek Invoices

When preparing Greek invoices, understanding the available formats and download options is critical for compliance and efficient operations. Invoices are typically available in common formats like PDF for easy viewing and printing. However, for electronic invoicing, structured formats such as Universal Business Language (UBL) XML are becoming increasingly important. Greece has implemented the myDATA platform, a central system for electronic reporting to the Tax Authority (AADE), which requires invoices to be transmitted and validated in real-time for fiscal validity.

  • Generate Invoice Data: Create your invoice using accounting software or an online platform that supports Greek compliance.
  • Choose Format: For traditional purposes, download the invoice as a PDF. For electronic submission, ensure your system can generate an EN 16931-compliant XML format.
  • Electronic Submission (myDATA): For B2B transactions, electronic invoicing through myDATA will become mandatory in phases, starting March 2, 2026, for large companies and October 1, 2026, for all other businesses. These electronic invoices must be transmitted to the myDATA platform, often via a Certified Service Provider, to receive a unique identifier (MARK) for validation.
