Key Features of a VAT-Compliant UK Invoice
To ensure your UK invoice is VAT-compliant, it must include specific details that satisfy HMRC requirements. A valid VAT invoice will always display your business's unique VAT registration number, which is a nine-digit identifier, clearly on the document. Beyond this, every invoice needs a unique, sequential invoice number that follows a continuous series, ensuring no gaps or duplicates.
For sole traders, your full name and trading name (if different) and address must be present. If you're a limited company, the invoice needs to show the full company name as it appears on the Certificate of Incorporation, your company registration number, and your registered office address. All invoices must also detail the supply date, the date of issue, a description of the goods or services, the quantity and price of each item, the total amount excluding VAT, the VAT rate applied, the total VAT amount, and the total amount payable.
