Understanding Overtime Pay in Israel
In Israel, overtime pay is governed by the Hours of Work and Rest Law, which outlines specific rules to ensure fair compensation for extended work hours. The standard workweek is 42 hours, as revised in April 2018, while a standard workday is 8.6 hours for a five-day week and 8 hours for a six-day week. Any work beyond these limits is considered overtime.
Overtime rates are structured to compensate employees fairly. The first two hours of overtime in a day are paid at 125% of the regular hourly rate, and any additional hours are compensated at 150%. For instance, working an extra three hours on a standard day means the first two are at the 125% rate, and the third hour at 150%. These rates ensure employees are adequately rewarded for their time.
Moreover, work on weekends or public holidays is compensated at a minimum of 150%, with some agreements offering higher premiums up to 200%. This structure not only incentivizes compliance with labor laws but also protects employees from exploitation, ensuring they are compensated appropriately for all hours worked.
