Key Features of GST-Compliant Invoices
To ensure legal compliance in India, a GST-compliant invoice must include several mandatory elements. Every invoice needs to clearly display the supplier's and recipient's GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number), a unique 15-digit alphanumeric code, along with their legal name, address, and invoice date. You must also include a unique, sequential invoice number, the place of supply, and a clear description of the goods or services provided. For goods, the HSN code (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is essential, while for services, the SAC code (Service Accounting Code) is required, typically at a 4 or 6-digit level depending on turnover. Proper application of Place of Supply rules is crucial to determine whether CGST/SGST (intra-state) or IGST (inter-state) applies, directly impacting the tax calculation.
