The Digital Work Card in Greece: A Foundation for Time Tracking Compliance
Since June 2021, Greece has mandated the use of the Digital Work Card, a critical component for ensuring compliance with labor law 4808/2021. This digital system requires all private employers to integrate their time tracking with the ERGANI II Information System. The system is designed to modernize labor practices by facilitating real-time updates on employee work schedules, shifts, and overtime directly to the Ministry of Labor.
The phased implementation of the Digital Work Card has been strategic: becoming mandatory for sectors such as retail and food service by July 2022, and extending to services and tourism by July 2023. By January 2026, all businesses in Greece will need to comply, regardless of size or sector. Employers face significant financial penalties, such as €10,500 per employee, for failing to activate the Digital Work Card or for unauthorized schedule changes.
