Essential Fields for a Compliant French Receipt

To ensure your receipt template is compliant in France, it must include several key mandatory fields. Every receipt, whether a simple "ticket" or a more formal "reçu," should clearly display your business's legal name and address, along with its SIREN or SIRET number. You'll also need a unique, sequential receipt number and the date of issue. For each item or service, provide a clear description, quantity, and unit price excluding tax. Crucially, all receipts must be written in French, as the use of the French language is compulsory in trade relations. If your business is VAT-exempt, you must explicitly state "TVA non applicable, art. 293 B du CGI" on the document.

Including VAT Details on French Receipts

Accurately including VAT (Value Added Tax), known as TVA in France, is critical for compliance. Your receipt template must clearly show the applicable VAT rate(s) for each item or service, the corresponding VAT amount, the total amount excluding tax, and the final total amount including all taxes (TTC). Your business's VAT identification number is also a mandatory inclusion. France has a standard VAT rate of 20%, with reduced rates of 10%, 5.5%, and a super-reduced rate of 2.1% for specific goods and services. A common pitfall is applying incorrect VAT rates, which can lead to penalties. For B2B transactions, including the customer's VAT number is also often required.

Customizing Your Receipt Template

Customizing your receipt template allows for business branding while maintaining compliance. You can incorporate your company logo, specific fonts, and colors to align with your brand identity. When adapting templates, consider the shift towards digital receipts in France; since August 1, 2023, automatic printing of paper receipts is generally banned, with digital options like email, SMS, or QR codes being the default if the customer consents. However, you are still legally obligated to provide a paper receipt if a customer requests one. For certain "durable goods" that carry a legal guarantee, paper receipts must still be printed automatically. Ensure your template design is adaptable for both digital display and physical printing.
