Understanding Greece's Digital Work Card and Ergani II
The Digital Work Card system, implemented in Greece starting in 2021, modernizes labor practices by ensuring compliance with working hours regulations. By January 2026, this system will be mandatory for all businesses. Initially introduced for salaried employees in June 2022, the system gradually expanded to include various sectors, with tourism and catering required to comply by March 2025. The Digital Work Card integrates with the ERGANI II Information System, transmitting data in real-time to the Ministry of Labor.
This system allows for real-time monitoring by the Greek Labour Inspectorate, ensuring adherence to legal working hours. Employers must retain work time measurement system records for a minimum of five years, with some requirements extending up to 10 years. Non-compliance can result in fines exceeding €10,000 per employee, highlighting the importance of accurate time tracking and data retention.
