Understanding Denmark's New Time Tracking Regulations
Denmark's new time registration law, Act no. 89, effective July 1, 2024, mandates comprehensive time tracking for all employers. This law responds to the 2019 European Court of Justice ruling, requiring EU member states to monitor working hours to comply with the EU Working Time Directive. It applies to all employers, irrespective of size or sector, to ensure adherence to regulations on maximum weekly working hours, rest periods, and employee health.
Employers must implement a system that is "objective, reliable, and accessible" to track daily working hours. While specific start and end times are not mandatory, recording total daily hours is crucial. Employees must have access to their time records for up to five years, facilitating compliance audits. Non-compliance can lead to fines and legal sanctions, emphasizing the importance of choosing reliable timesheet software.
